The Arctic's Unique Challenge

The belief that the Pan-Arctic area could contain up to a quarter of the world’s undiscovered hydrocarbon resources has ensured that there is significant and growing interest in the region.

Because of its inaccessible nature, information about the Arctic’s resources is in short supply. The harsh conditions present huge technical and economic challenges, particularly in regards to developing offshore reserves. Some research is already being undertaken, much more is planned.

The oil industry has a long history of overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles through a combination of investment, innovation and hard work. The Arctic will present a set of obstacles that will require all of the industry’s ingenuity and tenacity.
